Indoor Plant: Waterless Plant Cultivation with Semi-Hydro Culture

The vital role that plants play in creating an inviting and vibrant atmosphere. As a result, cakestudio365 had the opportunity to experiment with various methods of plant cultivation. We believe that Semi-Hydro Culture, in particular, could be an alternative approach for cafés without expert plant care. Today, we would like to share our experiences with you.

Semi-Hydro Culture: What is it?

Semi-Hydro Culture is a unique approach to plant cultivation that can be described as a combination of soil-based and hydroponic techniques. Unlike traditional soil-based cultivation, Semi-Hydro does not use organic materials as a growth medium. Instead, it utilizes alternative materials such as fired clay pellets, substituting soil, and includes an additional water reservoir.

Why is Semi-Hydro Culture beneficial for cafés?

Easy Maintenance: No need for frequent watering

In Semi-Hydro Culture, watering is replaced by a water-changing process. This means that watering is only required once every two weeks, eliminating the need for daily watering as in traditional soil-based cultivation. Furthermore, nutrient supplements and hormones can be administered during the water change, making it convenient for those with limited time or expertise in soil observation and moisture management.

Aesthetic Appeal: Enhancing the café's visual appeal

Semi-Hydro Culture allows for the use of aesthetically pleasing containers, resembling flower arrangements. This provides the opportunity to select visually appealing containers specifically designed for plant cultivation. The options are not limited to traditional plant pots. However, some modifications may be necessary to ensure that the containers have holes for water to penetrate the growth medium from the outer reservoir.

Durability: Suitable for indoor cultivation

Plants cultivated using the Semi-Hydro Culture method are relatively resilient when grown indoors. In our own experiments, we successfully cultivated plants in a room without air conditioning, where the temperature could become quite warm. Additionally, the presence of large windows allowed ample sunlight to enter the room. The plants we tested showed excellent growth and produced healthy foliage.
